What is Social Entrepreneurship?

The new 21st century buzzword.

An entrepreneur is a person who takes on the financial risk to open a business that fulfills a need in the market while maintaining a sustainable profit.

Social entrepreneurship goes a step further and takes on the same risk but the business strives to promote positive societal and environmental change while maintaining that profit.

In other words, social entrepreneurs endeavor to make money but also wish to “make a difference”.

Both ventures are certainly noble and fulfill marketplace needs.  However, if you can make business choices that take into consideration the impact you’re having on your suppliers for example, you can base your decisions on socially conscious goals rather than strictly financial considerations.  

For example, Barb Stegman created a perfume business and purchases her essential oils from Afghan farmers.  Not only does she receive the highest quality orange blossom oil but she ensures that Afghan farmers can maintain a sustainable business without having to resort to the production of opium producing poppies.  Supporting Afghanistan’s economy is key to building stability and peace for it’s people.

Most network marketing strategies involve selling or “sharing” products with your online  friends, acquaintances, business associates, neighbors or with anyone for that matter, that may be interested in your particular product.  These people constitute your “downline” and when they in turn share with THEIR network of contacts, they generate income for themselves, AS WELL AS for you. 

The more people brought on board, the greater the opportunity to create a team of like-minded, income generating members that can grow exponentially.  Remember the TV commercial …? “And they told two friends, who told two friends, and so on, and so on …”

The most popular network marketing companies involve sharing health supplementation products.  Weight loss solutions, energy and performance, healthy aging, etc.  By consuming the products and achieving your desired results, you become an advocate or walking advertisement for others to emulate.  The only thing you need to succeed after that is the desire to socialize and help other people.  Your honest enthusiasm will go a long way toward convincing others to jump on the bandwagon.

When others around you begin to see your positive results, they too will wonder what it is you’re doing.  It’s all about people helping people.  Once your fellow associates become as passionate about signing and helping others as you do, you can earn a substantial amount of money.

Social entrepreneurship is a  Win-Win propositon.
